Chris Pratt and Asymmetry

Today I learned even more about verilog, went outside for way too long, watched a movie and hit a thing with sticks.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

This isn't really a movie that deserves a full review. I enjoyed watching it, but there wasn't anything to take away from it.

I liked how they adapted the soundtracks from the games. They kept the core elements but changed it enough to make them a new experience nonetheless, and it matched well with the movie.

The action sequences were also very fluid, but I realize that that's to be a given for a movie with this much budget and hype. Watching lots of anime backed by good IPs have terrible animation has lowered my expectations enough that I'm always happy when I see animation that had real work put into it.

Stick Control

I've been going through a very old text called "Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" - it's recommended by pretty much every internet resource I could find. It's a big list of exercises you're supposed to do on a drum pad/snare drum, with markings on the bottom of the sheet music signifying which stick to use for each stroke.

I find it very easy to get into the flow with it. The book says to do each exercise 20 times, which seems a bit excessive (and it is, for some of the simpler ones!), but for a total beginner like me, putting in that kind of monotonous work for a long period of time probably helps me develop a lot of fluidity very efficiently.

I'm nearly done with the first 72 exercise, which are all 8th notes, but I will soon move on to triplets and rolls and more. Crossing my fingers that I can magically play anything on the drums after I'm through with the book.
